Letter Text

I have not received a line from you since you left us, which has given me much uneasiness, as reports from every quarter speak of alarming preparations and movements. The town is in continual agitation, and the inhabitants are daily expecting that something decisive will soon take place. I endeavor to keep my spirits composed, yet the anxiety of the times presses heavily upon me.

The care of our family and the management of our affairs now occupy my thoughts almost without intermission. I trust that Providence will protect you amidst the public dangers to which you are exposed, and I pray that wisdom may guide those whose counsels are to determine the fate of this country. Whatever may be the event, be assured that I shall do all in my power to maintain order and firmness at home, and to prepare our children for whatever trials may await them.

HAL 1776 Commentary

This letter marks a decisive shift in tone within the correspondence. Abigail’s concerns move beyond abstract political unease to the expectation of imminent conflict, mirroring the broader colonial mood on the eve of Lexington and Concord. Her words underscore how the approach of war transformed domestic life into a front line of endurance and preparation.
